Lions fight back against the Wolves
Pro’s bring out the best of the Light Blues
The Green Lions played their third and last game this season against Super League Senior Academy opposition with the visit of Warrington Wolves. This was probably the strongest Academy team with Chris Riley , Lee Mitchell , Matty Blyth and Matt Cooper all having Super League squad numbers and all have represented England academy as well as the Wolves in Super League.Backed up by a very talented group of players the Lions were blown off the park in the opening 40 minutes , with the clinical execution of plays starting with a dominance at the ruck and the ball being moved to expose the lack of shape on the flanks. The half time whistle couldn’t come too soon for Cambridge and the team very calmly re focused on what had happened and what they could do to fix it.
Defence the key
League leaders’ A team punished.
The Green Lions entertained Nottingham University for the second time this season this time in the guise of their 2nd team in the 1st round of the BUSA Shield. The training this week was pretty low key with emphasis placed on recovery after playing Quins RL U-21’s on sunday and with the visit of Warrington Wolves 21’s on saturday so the players had to hit their straps early in this game to get the ascendancy over a strong Nottingham side. The game was played for the most part in the Nottingham final third with good defensive pressure forcing errors but with the Lions not using the ball they were given with the field position.Nottingham defended well under pressure but ultimately the amount of tackling they had to do took its toll and tries were put on them in the final quarters of both halves.
Lions tough it out
Cambridge take on Quins RL U21’s
The Green Lions played the second of their games against Super League Reserve Grade opposition , with Quins RL being the opposition at Trinity Old Fields this week. There was a stronger presence on the bench this week with 5 props to rotate against a powerful and athletic set of forwards brought by Quins. The game was a stalemate for the opening quarter with good set completion by both sides and strong ruck defence negating the attacking opportunities. The Lions took the lead with a penalty in front of the posts on 22 mins , but this served to sting Quins into action and they scored 3 tries before the break to give a 16-2 lead at half time. This was a massive improvement on last Sunday’s performance against St Helens with the points against being halved and gave the team a chance to go forward with confidence in the second half.
