30th Anniversary Dinner , Sat 16th of January
Current students can’t appreciate what a big deal it was to start playing rugby league at cambridge university but there are players out there who played varsity matches under assumed names to avoid any issues with their rugby union sides and thirty years on from Dick McConnel and Andy St John forming a club at the university it is right that the club celebrates how far it has come in such a short space of time.
The club will have it’s 30th anniversary dinner at Fitzwilliam College on Saturday 16th of january , 2010 and it will follow the now annual Green Lions v CUARLFC game at trinity old fields being played at 2pm.It is a fantastic opportunity to meet up with your teammates of yesteryear and hopefully allow some of our lions who now live abroad to come over to cambridge and see how the game is moving on.
Bill Arthur of Sky Sports has agreed to MC the event and hopefully we will have Barrie McDermott and Terry O’Connor as after dinner speakers.Keep an eye out on the website for more info as the season moves on.
Table sales going well!
In the toughest economic situation companies have found themselves in for some time it is gratifying to see people still support the club at the Varsity match dinner. The after dinner speaker is now confirmed as Iestyn Harris , dual code international for Wales RL and RU and now making a name for himself as coach of Featherstone Rovers. The club are indebted to the support of Millgate Capital , St Helens RLFC , Kester Cunningham and John and Core Cambridge amongst others who will be supporting the event as well as our Old Boys and friends and family. We still have options on extra tables if there are any old boys out there who are still to commit.

Ady Spencer needs you!
Ady Spencer , Green Lion , London Bronco and now working for the RFL in london is collating a list of all our past players and trying to piece together the history of the club.Ady needs all players from the first team back in ‘81 all the way through to the current squad to send through all teamsheets from varsity matches , photos and any other memorabilia that you can scan in and send to Ady.It is a major undertaking but as the club grows year on year it is vital to the club that we stay in contact with all our players past and present.
Adopt a Player!
After the recent Green Lions v CUARLFC game it was put to the Lions that a great way to stay in touch with the club and also help the funding of the clubs’ activities
would be to sponsor a player and a figure of £25 was agreed as being an affordable donation from the Green Lions community.Ed Hayles (02-05) was the first taxi off the rank with sponsorship of Club President Paddy Hunt with the promise of more of the recent old boys joining him.Look out for the Current Players tab on the site and we will be uploading the players’ biogs , schools and colleges so you can take your pick of this year’s litter!
It really will help the club to continue with their work in advancing the sport within not only Cambridge but also within the UK as we are hosting Quins RL and playing at Knowsley Road , home of the mighty St Helens in ‘09 and to give the players the best sporting experience within university sport.
Please e mail if you are interested in adopting a player for ‘09 .
Trinity sees the first CUARLFC v Green Lions game!
Chairman Martin Woodcock is taking the reigns of the Green Lions in the innaugral old boys game this saturday , 6th of december at TOF. Eddie “Munster” Phillips has assembled a very strong team with players travelling from places as far flung as Jersey and Widnes to pull the jersey on again and the current crop that their great start to the season will count for nothing against the experience of the likes of Craig Bennett , Bobby Forrest , Sam Gluck , etc.The banter has started to fly around on text and e mail and safe to say there are no friendly games of league so it will be battle joined at 2pm.John Evans has named a full strength side to face the ageing warriors and is well ware of the challenge they pose , “This will be the hardest game we have had this season by far.I know all of the players who we will be facing and they are all to a man ,tough people and with Slash taking charge of their dressing room i fully expect pyrotechnics in the first twenty minutes. How their fitness holds up over the eighty minutes will be the nagging doubt in their minds and then it will be a battle of the fittest. As i said to Eddie Munster this week , eating bags of chips and looking at a computer screen isn’t great preparation for a game of League!“
Full match report and photos next week.
