Notts Trent 40 CUARLFC 12
For the first of two away trips to Notts Trent this season the blues travelled with a mixture of experience and players having their first taste of league.Notts Trent were runners up last season to cambridge and coached by Joe Shepherd again it was obvious that this would be a tough assignment with one of the stalwarts of the past three seasons for CUARLFC , Freddie Humphries , playing in the front row for notts as he is there on a law conversion course and this had revved up everybody on both sides.Trent started the stronger
with good set construction and a deep kicking game meaning that cambridge started sets well within their half and it was no surprise that they posted the first try of the game but with a reshuffle of the back line with the late arrival of players who had to travel independently , the team started to claw back field position and with penalties awarded coming off the back of quick play the balls Angus Sanders and Greg Cushing crossed the whitewash and led 12-6 heading up to halftime but trent weren’t about to roll over and scored on the bell to leave the scores tued 12 all at half time.
With no interchange in the props and with an injury to Paddy Hunt before the break meant that the second half would be tough going up the middle and it came to pass with good go forward from the trent forwards allowing their hooker and two halves the space to work the ball to both edges and stretch the blues defence and with a couple of grubbers taking wicked deflections led to another 5 tries being piled up and the final score did not reflect the arm wrestle that had taken place for most of the game.

John Evans was happy with the effort put in by the players , “Away games this year have been a test mainly because of availability and cambridge and oxford are pretty unique in BUCS league in that no players get time off to play sport on wednedays so continuity is tough and trent were never going to let us off the hook for having no cover in the front row.The effort all our players put into today was firts class and they need to concentrate on the next training session , lick their wounds and get ready for Coventry next week. You have to take your hat off to Mark Sweeney who put in an 80 minute shift for us at prop for the second week in a row and it will indidate how much players want to play for this club over the coming weeks to see if they can put it in front of all their other activities.“
