Light Blues toughen up
The visit of the unbeaten champions of Midlands A BUCS division was always going to be an intense affair.Coventry had dropped a division last year but had obviously rebuilt themselves over the course of the season and were ready to take on the challenge of the lions. The game kicked off at trinity old fields , the first time the team had played there until early december due to the weather and it was good for the players to be back on their stamping ground. The first twenty minutes were some of the toughest the lions have had to endure this season with brutal defence being dished out by both sets of forwards .The field position once established by the lions during this period was never going to be relinquished for the remainder of the half and three tries with two converted gave a half time scoreline of 16-0 to the lions.
The second half was started with a try in the opening minutes of the second half and with the resultant possession , good kicking game and great pressure on the Coventry kick reception team meant that trys followed with regularity.Coventry never stopped playing and were taking the ball up bravely but had no energy to convert any possession into field position and it was a clinical performance by the lions to make sure they had another defensive clean sheet.Final Score CUA 52 Coventry Uni 0.
Coach Evans was satisfied with the day’s work , “ At game prep training the night before i didn’t have to prompt the players regarding any of the set plays as they are now entering a phase of automatic play were they know were they need to be , the timing of their runs and the reading of the game and the players were buzzing coming off the field. They needed to put that into a game and i think they went beyond that with today’s performance.Coventry weren’t a mug team and were very physical throughout and played with some structure but with the control we exerted at the ruck with and without the ball they had very few scoring opportunities throughout the game.Quins RL u-18’s will be a different proposition on saturday and the squad will be freshened up to accommodate this with some players rested and others coming in for the game.It will be at a pace that they haven’t played this season and that will be a great experience for them.“
The KCJ Man of the Match was George Sykes for his smart play at hooker which led the team in the right direction for the duration of the game but all 17 players did their jobs today.
