CUARLFC 54 South London Storm ‘A’ 6
After having no game for the past ten days it was important to get eighty minutes under the belt before the xmas break and South London Storm accepted the challenge. The Storm are one of the flagship community clubs in london and the south and do great work in the schools in their immediate area of croydon as well as being a hub for junior clubs in the surrounding area and have produced many players for London Skolars as well as Quins RL scholarship and academy systems and many clubs in the north of england could take lessons on how the sport is developed and how the pathways work to the elite end of the game. The storm open age team are successful in both the RLC and the London League fielding two teams as well as an academy team every weekend in the summer months so the game at trinity was out of their season but they turned up to play tough but fair rugby league.
Captained by Andy Gilvarry who played for midlands students when John Evans coached them back in the day , the match kicked off in near perfect conditions which was a miracle after the rainfall we had had in cambridge the week before. The blues scored and early try and this gave them good field position for most of the half which was punctuated with well constructed tries down the middle and especially on the right edge. The storm weren’t going to lie down and there was some audible whack in some of the tackles they made in the middle of the field but the blues defence held firm and half time came with the scoreline , CUARLFC 28 South London Storm 0.
Halftime was spent looking at the areas we hadn’t performed to our potential and with a mood to redress this in the second half. There was a period of stalemate at the beginning of the second hal which can happen when a team’s momentum is stopped by the break but with some patience and with the storm trying to go too lateral too early meant that ball was spilled or intercepted and more tries followed including some 80 metre efforts. The storm kept their composure and continued to get stuck in but with the inevitable fatigue setting in due to the lack of possession the score line blew out towards the end.

Giovanni Cinque , general manager of the storm was full of praise for the blues , “ They were well disciplined and well drilled in the way they went about their work today.I have to be honest and say that their performance surprised us as we had played them two years ago and this was many stages above the performance we had seen at storm park that day.We are out of season and welcomed the game today as we struggle to get winter fixtures and if we can get a return match in the new year then that would be perfect for us and hopefully for the blues.“
Chairman Martin Woodcock was pleased with the days events , “ It was great to host the storm at trinity and we would like to thank Gio and his players for making the trip up to cambridge out of their normal season.I haven’t seen the team play for a month but i can see the improvements they have made especially in attack where there seem to be options and speed that perhaps we have lacked in previous seasons. With 6 players not available to John due to the varsity ski trip it will make it very interesting next term on who john selects and with 25 going to carcassonne in jan and we will have 30 + players in camp at trinity before we leave for france so it is an ultra competitive environment to train and play in.Well done to the lads this term and i hope to see more matches next term to cheer them on”.
