A week is a long time in politics and the same could be said for student rugby league with every team having major changes week in and week out due to availabilities and the need for squad depth is a major consideration. This week was no different with many of the more experienced players again not able to play for the club but this gives opportunities to others to get valuable experience of a full game.
One of the constants this year has been the shape of the back line and players are now looking more comfortable with every game and giving the club many more options on the edge than in recent years.Coventry are an improving club who have had a major turnover in personnel but coached by Ireland RL international Alan Robinson are showing signs of structure and team spirit. The game kicked off in perfect conditions and the ground was a credit to Darren Wood and his groundstaff.Cambridge looked after the ball well and with good kick chases and good shape in defence meant that field position was theirs for the majority of the half only punctuated by the odd penalty awarded to coventry.Tries started to flow after 20 minutes and the good ball sets were finished off with aplomb on the blues right edge in particular.
The half time score of 22-0 was slightly below what should have been registered with the weight of possession and the players were conscious of the fact that they left attacking side had not been in the game so the attacking emphasis was shifted to that side of the field.More tries followed in the second half but most pleasing was the ruck defence and in turn the edge defence as well with all the players knowing their jobs and coventry never looked likely to breach the line.
Final Score . CUARLFC 38 Coventry Uni 0
Alan Robinson was impressed with the blues attitude , “Cambridge never stopped communicating all day in defence and attack and with enthusiasm everything is possible. We are building a club up after last season’s success but hats off to cammbridge today , they were too strong and well organized for us onthe day.Good luck to them next march!“
Captain for the day Wingate-Saul was happy with parts of the game , “We were too flash with the ball in the opening 20 minutes and gave up good possession near the line due to overplaying.Once we had racked up a couple of tries we started to relax and play with shape and purpose at the scoring end of the field.Great to see all our tries coming from the back line with two and three pass shifts isolating defenders and then finishing the play. The short side plays were working well today and we seem to have more options this season but i’m sure that with the return of some of our more experienced forwards that they will want to get their name on the score sheet as well!“
