About Us
Cambridge University Amateur Rugby League Football Club was formed in 1970 for the initial Varsity Match againsy Oxford University. In the 26 years since formation the club has made a considerable increase in both its prominence within the University sporting community and within the Student Rugby League.
The club competes in the Midlands Division of the SRL competition. Fixtures for the 2006/2007 seasons can be seen on the “Results and Fixtures” section of this website.
The first Wednesday of March is the annual Varsit Match, which for the first time in 2004 was screened Live on Sky Sports. This level of coverage was continued in 2005 with viewing figures greater than some Super League games- a reflection of the quality and standard at which our club now plays.
The 17-16 winning margin for CUARLFC in the 2005 Varsity Match was the closest in our history. The result was even more impressive considering that the team trailed 16-0 with 25 minutes left. The outstanding individual contribution of Alex Drysdale, scoring 2 trys and a drop goal won him both the man of the match award and the “Hawk of the Year”.
2006 saw Cambridge win by a record margin of 44-0, a result which was a tribute to the hard work ethic and organisation instilled in the squad by coach, John Evans.
The club is aiming for another successful season both on and off the field, with training starting on Saturday 7th October and the first match at home to Nottingham University on Wednesday 18th October.
New players and supporters are always welcome!
